What Others Have to Say

Even though I have a full-time career, my volunteer work fits in seamlessly with the other interests in my life. There are so many Angel opportunities on varying days of the week. In fact, I co-chair a committee for which I can do much of the work on my own schedule. I love sharing elements of the Angel community with my husband, daughter and friends. My daughter and I have fun volunteering together when we can, and I know she is learning the value of giving back and the importance of being a caring person. Overall, I am impressed with the fundraising ability of the Angels, the dedication and organization of the volunteers, and the emphasis on causes related to children and families. Being an Angel has far exceeded my expectations and has positively impacted my life. I would not trade the experience for anything!
The Attic Angels generously 'adopted' Falk Elementary School in 2010, and they have been so huge in helping to meet the needs of kids and families here. They have become part of the fabric of our school. They help organize and staff our fund-raising events, they provide tutoring services for academic success and they fill our Family Resource Center with food, toiletries, school supplies and clothing for economically disadvantaged families. Our school family provides an opportunity to deepen their commitment to children. It’s a wonderful partnership that benefits the entire community.
Attic Angel Community is our home, and many of us live alone. When we connect with Angels, it’s like opening doors to the outside world. Each one has a different area of expertise and often an interesting career. I love learning from them. That was a big appeal for me when I became an Angel myself in 1972. I was on the continuing education committee that still to this day brings in outside speakers for the residents to enjoy. I also loved the oral history of residents during my visits and lunchtime outings with them. You can learn a lot from the elderly and make really good friends that bridge generations. At night, I go to bed thanking Attic Angel for the 24/7 love, care and protection offered to all of us.
Our mother has always greatly enjoyed the company of Angels for art projects, music, ice cream socials, happy hours, holiday parties, even trips to the dentist when our usual transportation plans fall through. For her recent 90th birthday party, an Angel took the time to create beautiful vases as table decorations, filling them with flowers from her own garden. We have felt blessed to be able to have our mother part of a community that provides comfort, kindness and joy every day, due to the generosity of time and thoughtfulness by these lovely women. They care for our mother, and their work touches the entire family.
Attic Angel Association has been wonderful to us! We have been blessed with support in opening our school, we received help with curriculum and training of our teachers, and they provided resources for tuition scholarships that help children attend our center. We are grateful to Attic Angel and their true commitment to helping the community. We have been able to provide children with a great early childhood experience, and we say thank you for coming alongside and helping to make our school possible!
My early years as an Angel were focused on using my background in occupational therapy to work with residents in the creative arts. My middle years proved to be a time to grow, stretch beyond my comfort zone and learn many new skills. I took an accounting class and served for many years as Treasurer and then Chair of the Association as well as a member of many committees. I now spend most of my volunteer time on fundraising sales and serving communion for residents, sharing some of the spiritual aspects of their lives. Each stage of membership has been very rewarding because of all the people whose lives I’ve touched, and who’ve touched mine, and because of the many other like-minded Angels, whom I greatly admire and respect.
Every day I see the difference Angels make for our residents. It’s amazing how a simple smile and some interesting conversation can brighten their moods, which in turn improves the residents’ overall well-being and improves their health as well. My colleagues and I cherish those we care for, but the requirements of our job keep us on the move. That’s where the Angels bring in an ongoing continuity of friendship and care that makes all the difference in their daily lives. Kindness, joyfulness and genuine interest in others never goes out of style, and our residents truly enjoy the company of the Angels that have become a part of their lives.

The Playing Field

The Playing Field Poster

Children affected by trauma such as homelessness and those with special needs such as autism spectrum disorders have different sensory needs for emotional support that helps them learn to manage behaviors. Our dream is to create a play space that allows children to be successful while ... being kids! Some of our plans:

  • A large open space for running (crowded spaces are often a behavior trigger for children)
  • High fencing and an appropriate climbing structure (children impacted by trauma or those on the autism spectrum often take bigger risks and climb higher)
  • Sensory panels that welcome independent play when children are agitated
  • A maze for children to walk through (this helps the brain to organize)
  • Small structures where children can feel safe
  • Specially designed pieces to work large muscle groups

By helping children at this critical point in their development, your gift will be helping the future of our community!
